Meen Achar (Kerala Style Fish Pickle) Recipe

Ingredients Any medium sized fish (King Fish, Seer Fish or Salmon) - 1/2 kg
Garlic - 5 cloves
Ginger - 1 inch piece
Mustard seeds - 1/2 Tsp
Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 Tsp
Fenugreek powder (Uluvappodi) - 1/4 Tsp
Asafoetida - a pinch
Curry leaves - a sprig
Turmeric powder - 1/4 Tsp
Chilli powder - 2 Tsp
Vinegar - 1/2 cup
Oil - 5 Tbsp
Salt to taste
To marinate the fish
Turmeric powder - 1/2 Tsp
Chilli powder - 1 Tsp
Pepper powder - 1 Tsp
Salt to taste
Cooking InstructionsClean the fish and cut into small cubes. Marinate the fish with turmerc powder, chilli powder, pepper powder and salt. Keep aside for sometime. In a pan heat oil and fry the fish until it is cooked and firm, but careful not to overcook or burn it. Remove from pan and keep aside. In the same oil splutter mustard seeds and add fenugreek seeds. Now add the crushed garlic and ginger. Saute well for about 3 minutes. Now add fenugreek powder, salt and asafoetida. Also add the curry leaves. Mix well and saute for another 3 minutes. Pour in the vinegar. Add the fish pieces. Mix well. Allow to cool and transfer to a glass bottle. It can be stored in fridge for few months.
