Listed in: Vegetarian
Pavakka - 1/2 kg
Tamarind - 100 g
Grated coconut - 1 cup
Turmeric powder - 1/2 Tsp
Cumin seeds - 1 Tsp
Green chillies - 3
Water - 2 cups
Oil, salt - as required
(Coconut oil is preferred for coconut based preparations, but you may use any oil of your choice)
For seasoning
Mustard seeds - 1/2 Tsp
Shallots (kunjulli) - a few
Curry leaves - a sprig
Slice the pavakka into 1" pieces (similar to pieces in aviyal). Boil water in a pan. Add the pavakka pieces. Add salt. Make the tamarind into a thick paste and add to the water. Tamarind is added while pavakka is cooking to reduce the bitterness and to impart sourness (pulippu) to the ozhichu curry. Cover and cook till pieces are tender. Grind coconut, turmeric powder, green chillies and cumin seeds into a paste. Add this paste to the cooked pavakka and mix well. Cover and cook in low flame for a few minutes. You may add more water if you like to to make it lighter or alternatively you may cook for few more minutes to make it thicker according to your preference. Remove from fire. In a separate pan heat oil and splutter mustard seeds. Saute shallots until golden brown, add curry leaves and saute for few more minutes. Add to the pavakka curry and mix well. Serve hot with rice and other dishes.
